The one thing most Americans hear these days as to why we became an independent nation is that the founding fathers–who were supposedly mostly Deists–were upset at "taxation without representation." But was there a religious element that drove American independence? There indeed was. The Road to Independence shows that Christianity paved a pivotal role in the push for the colonies to become a free nation. For example, the Great Awakening was one of the major factors that helped to unite 13 separate British colonies. Furthermore, pastors (especially those in New England) preached liberty so often that they helped to create the United States.
